Degree Requirements
Minimum Requirements for the M.S. Degree

Complete at least thirty-two hours of courses including:
-
Twenty two hours of lecture and laboratory classes including at least 2 hours of 500-level classes (excluding seminar or thesis and research)

Two hours of seminar (ANSC 590)
-
Eight hours of thesis and research (ANSC 599)
-
Registration is required each semester in ANSC 590
-
A grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.00 (4.00=A) for all graded courses taken during the student's enrollment in the M. S. degree program;
-
A thesis that is approved by a faculty committee and submitted to the Graduate College in conformance with Graduate College requirements
-
Completion of all requirements within five years of initial registration in the Graduate College.

Minimum Requirements for the Ph.D. Degree
-
Complete at least ninety six hours of courses including:

32 hours of graduate credit taken during the student's Master's degree program or in another department or university, subject to approval by the Graduate College
-
Between 20 and 28 hours of advanced lecture and laboratory courses
-
At least 32 hours in Thesis and Research (ANSC 599)
-
No more than 4 hours of seminar (ANSC 590)

Registration is required each semester in ANSC 590.

Attain a grade point average of at least 3.00 (4.00=A) in all graded courses taken during the student's enrollment in the Ph.D. degree program.

Pass an oral preliminary examination covering the student’s proposed dissertation research as well as the adequacy of the student's preparation to undertake advanced, independent research.

Prepare a dissertation that meets the approval of a faculty committee and conforms with Graduate College requirements.

Complete all requirements within:

6 years of initial registration in the Ph.D. program for students who did not enter the Ph.D. program directly after completing an M. S. in the University of Illinois Graduate College; or
-
7 years of initial registration in the M. S. program for students whose M. S. and Ph.D. degrees were earned in succession at Illinois.
